Pinus lambertiana, sugar pine, USDA H6-hardy
A massive tree to 60-70m height if left unbonsaid, and can be long lived to @750yrs. Lambertiana is not straight forward to grow from seed. This batch is only the3rd successful batch we have had in 17yrs with many others failing. We guess this is why it’s rare in cultivation.
The tree has good ‘architectural’ form- a tall narrow open form sometimes with semi-random arrangement of branches. The needles are @10cm long, very stiff and dark green with bluish-white stomatal lines underneath. Yellow pollen cones. Seed cones are the longest of any pine- solitary or in whorls, pendulous and on a 4” stalk. They reach a length of 56cm x 20cm diameter(when open).
